25 Really Good Conversation Topics For All Situations

There are many different situations in which you need to be able to come up with good conversation topics

Meeting someone for the first time, finding yourself in a social gathering of strangers, meeting your partner’s family, or handling a job interview, are just a few examples where being able to guide the conversation is critical.

Of course, each situation will need to be handled differently, and you will need to assess very quickly where any particular topic is leading in case you need to change direction.

For example, let’s say you introduce the topic of food and drink. To your horror you discover that that you are talking to an alcoholic, so you need to rapidly move on to another topic. Always try to think one step ahead, always have a “plan B”.

Try to ensure that you present the topic in an interesting way and don’t be afraid of controversy. On the other hand, if you don’t know the people well, the traditional topics to avoid are Sex, Money, Politics, and Religion. The risk of saying something that might offend is too high, so stay away.

Always remember that you are trying to have a conversation, so allow the other party to respond. Don’t fire off questions in rapid succession and try not to act like an interviewer.
