When one Minnesota dog rings a toy bell that her family attached to the door to the backyard, they know it means she needs to go to the bathroom.
Yet when mom Jodi Lewis heard the faint jingle if the bell in the middle of the night, she tried to ignore it when she saw what time it was, since the family dog, Coco, never has to go to the bathroom at night. As the ringing got louder and more urgent, however, she had no choice but to get up and see what was the matter.
Lewis walked out of her bedroom and discovered the house was on fire and quickly grabbed her two children, and ran out the door with Coco by their side. Firefighters arrived shortly after, but the fire was so strong it took them two hours to finally put it out and locate the family’s cat, who had been hiding under a mattress and received oxygen.
“Thankfully their dogs alerted them even before the smoke detectors went off and they and their pets were able to get out safely,” explained the family’s friend, Nora Flueger Avery, on the GoFundMe page she set up in the family’s honor. “We are very grateful for our little canine first responder, she’s our early warning system,” Lewis said.
