One cold day in February, a couple noticed a white dog curled up on the ground in the middle of the Florida Everglades, far from any home or shelter.
When the dog finally got up to find a more comfortable place to rest, he slowly staggered in circles and appeared very sick and confused. The couple spent hours calling every animal organization they could think of, and finally, the Broward Sheriff’s Office showed up.
When deputies arrived, they were horrified at the dog’s condition. A rash covered most of his body, and his eyes were extremely swollen. It became clear to everyone that this dog had suffered for a long time.
While the dog was nervous around officers, he did allow them to pet him, which was a sign he wasn’t so aggressive. The dog, however, was unable to walk, and rescuers needed to carry him to safety.
Sandra, the founder of Dezzy’s Second Chance Animal Rescue agreed to take the dog in and named him powder due to his color.
Powder received emergency medical care, and it was discovered it was infested with demodectic mange and entropion- a genetic condition that caused his eyelids to fold inward.
Powder needed surgery to save his eyes, but sadly he was too sick for the procedure. Doctors treated him for everything else and worked day and night to get Powder in good health.
When he was reassessed later, he was finally able to receive surgery, and five months later, Powder is a completely different dog than he used to be. He gained 13 pounds, his eyes have healed from surgery, and his coat is back to a healthy powder white.
