Nurse Shares Heartbreaking Photo Revealing What It’s Really Like To Work In The NICU

While doctors and surgeons get credited with saving lives every day, we know well that they’d be nowhere without their nurses, who do a whole lot more than handing over scalpels and taking a patient’s temperature.

As you can see in this touching article about a sick 4-year-old boy “marrying” his favorite nurse in the hospital, these men and women are the often unsung heroes in the medical community. A heartwrenching Facebook post by young nurse Brittany Denise French proves this better than anything.

Brittany is a nurse in the NICU (neonatal intensive care unit) who revealed that she constantly has to tell people that life surrounded by ailing newborns isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. “Most everyone knows I am a nurse! A NICU Nurse. Many people think this means feeding and rocking babies, which occasionally I get the privilege to do…But my job entails so much more.”

In the photo below, Brittany holds a deceased 5-month-old baby girl, one of many newborns she sees enter the world and leave it all too soon. The nurse sometimes witnesses miracles, seeing babies survive against all odds, but she also has to hand over lifeless babies to their devastated parents, and she cries.

“I sometimes cry in the car on my way home, in the shower, or as I try to fall asleep before going into work to take care of other little lives.
I lean on my coworkers. Those other NICU nurses I’m so blessed to work besides. I look to them for knowledge, wisdom, and support.
Yes, my “job” is a NICU Nurse. But it proves time and time again to be so much more.”
