Petrified Dog Abandoned In A Parking Lot Gets A Second Chance

When dogs are neglected or abandoned by the people they love the most, they often don’t understand what happened or what they did to deserve such treatment.

And when one poor pup was abandoned by his owner in the parking lot of a North Carolina convenience store, she was so confused and afraid that she just stood in the exact spot her owner left her for hours in the freezing cold rain in case they decided to come back.

Customers came and went from the parking lot and completely ignored the heartbroken dog, but thankfully one compassionate woman finally spotted the dog and came to her rescue. “When I got out of the car, my heart sank,” said Valinda Cortez, who pulled into the parking lot on Sunday Morning. “This poor baby had been out in the rain and cold for a long time. She was freezing. It was apparent to me that this baby had been dumped.”

Cortez gently draped a warm blanket over the dog and sat with her for an hour before trying anything else that might frighten or stress the dog out. “Her hair was wet and matted,” Cortez said. “Her front leg was cut. Her eyes were obviously infected. My heart was breaking. I never think these things through so I wasn’t sure what I was going to do with her after I had her.”

Eventually, Cortez and her friend Sue Massi, a volunteer animal rescuer, carefully got the dog in their car and took her to a nearby animal shelter.”Humans had let her down but hopefully the food, warm blanket and love I gave her will restore her faith in humans,” Cortez said.

And a few days after her rescue, the dog, who they renamed Cassie, can’t stop smiling and is even looking for a forever home. “That picture of her is perfect. Such a difference. My heart is happy,” Cortez said. “There are always options. What if I ignored this cold, wet, hungry dog and kept driving? She could have froze to death, been hit by a car or numerous other things. It’s not that hard to find a shelter that will take your animal.”
