Whenever a surgery is performed, even if it is the most routine of procedures, there is a chance that something could go wrong. If there is a 1 in 50,000 chance of a complication from a procedure, you could always be that 1 person out of the massive crowd.
When one woman went into the hospital for a very common procedure, she would turn out to be the one person out of many with terrible luck. But after tragedy struck, something happened that went against all conventional wisdom…
Ruby Graupera-Cassimiro was pregnant later in life than most women. Though she’d already had a son some years ago, she was 40 years old when she was due to have her daughter. She learned from her doctors that giving birth at her age came with some increased risks.

For that reason as well as some other factors, Ruby’s doctors believed that a cesarean section would be the safest method of delivery both for her and her baby. Ruby and her husband considered their advice and agreed. When the time came, she went to the hospital to have the surgery done…
About 1 in 3 births in the US are by C-section so it’s safe to say that it’s a fairly routine and generally safe procedure. The doctors had every confidence that they could get the job done without any major complications or risks. At first, it seemed as if they were correct.
At the end of the the procedure, which took about an hour, Ruby’s daughter Taily was brought into the world, happy and healthy, without any troubles. But just a short while after Taily was born, Ruby started to experience a shortness of breath…
As doctors began to assess what was wrong with Ruby, her breathing trouble kept getting worse. Her husband was experiencing a rollercoaster of emotion when, just after his beautiful daughter was born, his wife suddenly lost consciousness, sending a spike of fear through his heart.
Ruby was eventually unable to breathe at all on her own. The hospital staff put her on a respirator. They continued to work to restore her to breathing naturally but as time went by, their efforts were met with no success…
To make matters worse, Ruby’s heartbeat was fading. After hours of trying to resuscitate her, Ruby’s heart couldn’t take any more. It stopped beating entirely. The medical staff continued to do all they could, hoping they could restart her heart.
For 45 minutes after her heart stopped, Ruby’s doctors continued their efforts, using shock paddles and chest compressions to try and restore her heartbeat and restart her breathing. In the end, it seemed as if they failed. “We had brought the family in. We had announced to them that we had done all we could.” Then, something happened…
Not Over Yet
After hearing the news, her family left the room to pray. As doctors were just about to call her time of death, there was a blip on her heart monitor. Shortly after that, there was another blip… then another.
Against all conventional wisdom, after the doctors had ceased their efforts, Ruby’s heart had started beating again. One of the nurses came out of the operating room with a shocking message for Ruby’s family. “Keep praying, she told them, “because her heart just started.”…
Feeling Just Fine
Ruby’s vitals grew stronger and stronger and, by the next day, she was strong enough to be completely taken off life support. Not only was she on the way to a full recovery, she’d suffered no brain damage or other ill effects, even though she’d been on the brink of death.
Brush With Death
“I was dead,” said Ruby. “My husband tells me, ‘You were gray. You were cold as ice, and you were dead. You had no color in your lips.’ “ From Ruby’s perspective, it also seemed as if she had died…
Glimpse of the Afterlife
“I remember seeing a spiritual being, who I believe was my dad,” Ruby said. “I remember the light behind him and many other spiritual beings.” She had had what she believed to be a genuine experience of the afterlife.
In describing how it felt, Ruby said “I wasn’t walking, I was kinda flowing.” Adding that it was “peaceful, I mean there’s nothing to be afraid of.” Just when she thought that the time had come for her to join her father and others in the afterlife, something happened…
“At one point it was like a force, almost,” she said. “It was like ‘you’re not going any further. this is it.’” “that’s when I understood ‘you’re not going to stay here,’” she added. “This is just a little bit, you’re gonna go back. It’s not your time.”
Don’t Fear The Reaper
“In a follow-up with one of the physicians, she looked him dead in the eye and said ‘You don’t have to be afraid of dying,’” said a spokesman for the hospital. “I’ve never seen a group of people so impacted, if you will, by what they saw. They were all very struck,” he added…
But what had caused Ruby’s brush with death in the first place? Her doctors believed that she had a rare condition called an amniotic fluid embolism, which is what happens when the amniotic fluid leaks into the blood stream. It causes blood clots and leads to cardiac arrest.
“It’s normally diagnosed post mortem,” the spokesman said, underlining how high the mortality rate is for such a condition. Medical science doesn’t fully understand how amniotic fluid embolisms work. “It’s likely that amniotic fluid contains components that cause an inflammatory reaction and activate clotting in the mother’s lungs and blood vessels,” according to Mayo Clinic’s website…
“There’s very few things in medicine that I’ve seen, working in the trauma center myself and doing all the things that I do, that really were unexplainable or miraculous,” said the president of the hospital’s medical staff. “And when I heard this story, this was the first thing that came to mind.”
After her recovery, both Ruby and Taily were able to return home on a normal timeline for a mother who’d given birth by C-section. A hospital spokesman even described her as “the picture of health.” At a reunion with the hospital staff some time later, she said “I don’t know why I was given this opportunity but I’m very grateful for it. God had the right people in the right place.”
