Parents will do anything for their children. In the face of danger, they’ll find strength and abilities they never knew they had and in the face of poverty, they will take desperate measures to ensure that their children are fed, clothed, and have a safe home.
One young Nevada couple had been doing just that for their children when the day came that the risks they had taken in defense of their kids finally came back to bite them in the worst way imaginable…
Called to the Scene
The police had received a disturbing call. As officers sped to the scene of what was very likely a double homicide, they steeled themselves for what they were about to see. There were rumors from dispatch that children were involved, though they had no idea in what way. Either way, they were urged to be cautious, the shooter might still be there.
Mesquite police officer Brad Swanson was first to arrive on the chilling scene. It was a desolate part of town where the crime had taken place. The owners of the trailer, Tamara and her boyfriend Rob, didn’t make much but had tried to create some semblance of a home for their two children. But that night had shattered all that forever, and it was all due to some very poor choices…
It was a cold day, near the end of January and 19-year-old Beau was heading over to visit some friends with his 16-year-old sister Monique. They left their parents house under the pretence of visiting their friends Tamara and Rob, but their real reason for the visit was to procure something of a recreational and illegal nature.
Tamara and her boyfriend Rob lived together with Tamara’s two young daughters, 3-year-old Kristyanna and 10-year-old Brittney. Unable to make ends meet through conventional means, Tamara and Rob had taken to selling drugs to supplement their income. The brother and sister had come over to the family home to purchase a solid $125 worth of methamphetamine…
Rob and Tamara sold off the goods and the deal was done. Beau and his sister returned home, but when they dumped out their purchase, they were dismayed to find that the alleged Meth they’d just spent their hard-earned money on was nothing more than salt. They had been ripped off and they were infuriated..
They Mean Business
It was then that something snapped in the two siblings. They didn’t just want their money back, they wanted revenge for the insult. The bitter siblings made their way back to the family’s RV in Mesquite, Nevada. They carried with them the fake Meth, knives in their hands, and hate in their young hearts…
We Don’t Want Any…
Beau knocked on the door but it soon became clear that Tamara and Rob had both gone out, leaving only 10-year-old Brittney to take care of her little sister. Despite her age, Brittney was no fool and she refused to open the front door to Beau. Monique, who was younger and sweeter than her brash brother, decided to knock next.
Monique Maestas knocked on the door and told Brittney that she needed to open the door quickly because her mother was hurt. The 10-year-old, worried that something had indeed happened, opened the door. The ruse had worked. There stood Beau and Monique Maestas, knives in their hands, looking for revenge…
As soon as the door was opened, the Maestas leapt upon the defenseless little girls. They attacked the girls with knives. Beau made short work of three-year-old Kristyanna, slicing her throat before pulling the knife out and shoving it halfway through her head. Brittney was stabbed at least twenty times and two of those wounds to her back severed her spinal cord.
Tamara returned home soon after, but the Maestas siblings had already fled the scene. She called the police and held on to Brittney. When Officer Swanson arrived, he knelt beside her and helped apply pressure to Brittney’s bleeding wounds. He asked her questions, trying his best to keep her awake. If she fell asleep, it would be all over…
Kristyanna died from her wounds before paramedics could arrive, but somewhat miraculously, Brittney survived. Her wounds however were severe and she would remain paralyzed from the waist down for the rest of her life. So not only had Beau and Monique robbed her of her sister, they had stolen her own life away from her in a way as well.
I Saw Them Officer
It actually wasn’t long until the Maestas siblings were captured. When Beau’s girlfriend heard what had happened to the two little girls, she came forward and told police that she knew for a fact he was at the trailer that evening. Soon enough the police even found the bloody clothing and knives as well…
While in custody, Beau Maestas released what was possibly one of the most gruesome and unnerving confessions the Mesquite Police Department had ever heard. Not only did he admit to killing the girls, he seemed proud, almost amazed at his own murderous skills.
“Slaughtering those little piggies. I flipped out and went and killed that lady’s youngest daughter and I paralysed the older one. Three used to be my lucky number. Now, when I think of three, I see a little body hanging eye-level from a knife that’s half her size and that’s in my blood. That was some of the most brutal shit I’ve ever seen.” It was enough for the DA to consider a serious penalty…
Push for Penalty
During their trial, Clark County District Attorney David Roger decided that the nature of the crime and the pride Maestas showed in his confession, made it clear that he deserved nothing short of the death penalty. “When you have a young child, 3 years old, who was never given a chance to enjoy all that life has to offer…Going in there with a butcher knife and doing this to those girls over $125 was horrific…” he explained in the courtroom.
His argument was persuasive enough and Beau Maestas was sentenced to death. Monique Maestas however, had pleaded guilty as part of a plea bargain and was sentenced to life imprisonment with parole eligibility after 40 years. Some years later, she would show up in the papers again, for a new crime…
Monique Maestas had been in prison for a decade when she began to take up with a rather unconventional lover. The man was kind and would write her letters telling her how much he missed her. They would talk about their future and how they could one day be together for good.
The problem wasn’t that the lover was mistaken in any way. He truly did intend to build a life with Monique when her parole went through. Monique wanted to believe him when he told her that he loved her. The problem they had was that she was a convicted felon and he was Correctional officer Eugenio Dimas…
The Plot Thickens
The 52-year-old veteran state corrections officer had been involved with Monique Maestas for years. They had talked on the phone and even engaged in sexual intercourse on more than one occasion. Still, they had managed to keep the relationship secret for most of their time together, until they ran afoul of one jealous inmate.
Prison officials learned of the relationship when the jealous inmate warned a prison commander that Maestas might attack a third inmate in a jealous rage, because she was flirting with Dimas. In the end, Dimas pleaded guilty to one felony count of misconduct of a public officer and now faces a year in prison.
