Imagine yourself taking a nice stroll through the beautiful countryside somewhere in France. It’s a lovely sunny day and you’re all alone, with no one in sight, when suddenly you stumble upon something you shouldn’t have. It’s a creepy-looking hatch door and someone has left it wide open. Would you play it safe or check it out?
Anyone with common sense would probably keep walking, but when Manit007 found this open trap door in the countryside, he took it as an open invitation to make his way inside and see what he could find. The French blogger posted his creepy findings on the website Jeux Video before Imgur user Rukene translated his English translations. And the result is stranger than anything we could have imagined…

No Stranger To Danger
The curious Frenchman explained that he found the strange entrance in the countryside and entered through the open hatch. He also admitted that he likes to snoop everywhere and is no stranger to exploring other people’s property, adding he previously climbed a bell tower. As he wandered down the open door, he started to take photos.
Adventure & Exploration
“I love to speak about adventure and exploration. This is just the example of my life, prove that we should open our eyes, leave the screens to roam and live real adventures,” he continued to explain. Before he went down the hatch, he wrote his name on a piece of cardboard to prove his findings were for real. Or maybe in case, he found himself in danger and someone found his camera later on?
Down The Hatch
As he made his way down the hatch, he discovered that the shape of the room matched the circular tank on the surface, noting that it was very eerie. Below that, he found a locked door and an old phone with no dial tone, because there’s no electricity and a staircase. “I might also add that my footsteps echo heavily on the metal floor, announcing the emptiness underneath?,” he wrote.
In A Dream
Manit007 went on to explain that he has always wanted to explore an old mine or underground shaft someday. “I was in a dream,” he said, adding that he felt like he was alone on an old ghost ship as his footsteps rattled through the metal cage. “It was exhilarating,” he wrote, but to us this sounds just downright terrifying…
Shine A Light
Remember, Manit007 was all alone as he made his way down the shaft, into the unknown. He has no idea what or who could be living in the darkness, but he decided to take his chances. Luckily for this explorer, he had a flashlight handy, ready to make the scary descent.
In Too Deep?
Finally, after about 20-30 meters, or nearly 100 feet, further below the ground he could see the bottom. His legs were tired from all the climbing, but he was truly in too deep to stop now. And what he found at the bottom was most peculiar…
Manit007 had found a second hatch, leading deeper below the ground. But what could this bizarre place hidden underneath the French countryside be? “I admit that it looks like something like a missile launch facility,” he said.
Our adventurer found another non-working rotary phone and thought there must be a way to date this strange capsule through its make and model. From there, he couldn’t make his way down because the next hatch was closed. But there was a door…
Elevator To Where?
He believed he had discovered a freight elevator to go down even further. “Then the excitement began to make a little room for anguish, 50 meters underground, I will have to go back a huge staircase sprinting for 10 minutes,” he said.
As brave as Manit007 was, he was not completely foolish and didn’t want to put himself in danger by continuing down into the dark and have a bad encounter. “I was completely into it with my footsteps echoing from the start, my vision was limited to what I saw in my lamp beam, nothing else existed,” he said. But now things were starting to get terrifying…
He encountered another closed door and the stairs went down so far that he couldn’t even see the bottom. “There I arm myself, I heard people talking, maybe it’s just my imagination,” he said. He stopped to rest and contemplate continuing his journey into the abyss. “Above or below me: the darkness. I could not tell if I was 50 meters or 100 meters deep, I went down for about 30 minutes already.”
Losing His Grip
But there was no stopping him now. He traveled down for another 20 minutes until he began to see water seep through the walls and then started running. At this point, the curious Frenchman was losing his grip on reality and asked himself if he was dreaming or not until about 45 minutes down, when he made a breakthrough…
He had finally reached the bottom, but he was no closer to understanding where he was. “For a few minutes I remained silent because I really heard voices,” he said before realizing it was just noises from the vibrating stairwell and the wind far above him. In any case, he just prayed that no one was following him…
An Open Door
Our adventurer then found boxes of soil, which completely puzzled him. But then, alas! Finally, an open door, rather a double door, all the way at the bottom of the seemingly endless hatch. He bravely entered another strange room, which had many dead-end corners and four large machines. What could they be used for?
Clearly, wherever he was and whatever he had found was extremely old — and not meant to be found. “Nothing works, everything is dark, I heard a muffled sound far away or maybe behind the walls but no electricity, all lights on the control panel are off,” he said. Next, he discovered a control box with red lights — And the explanation for the blackout and no electricity.
Finally, he found something he could identify: An erotic magazine from around 1970, placed on top of a big ventilator. Followed by something he couldn’t: “A big plastic bin filled with…”? He also came across a station to measure the water levels and A LOT of creepy corridors. “The first led to a kind of dead end, a room barely dug into the rock. The second continues further, and then I was not prepared at all for the rest…”
It was so hot that the lack of air made it harder to walk… and harder to breathe. “The more it goes the more it becomes damp, unhealthy … and hot! You can see water beading on the ceiling, this is not infiltrations but the water that condenses and falls, it must be 30 degrees, it’s always stuffy and this acidic odor that attack[s] my nose, I think I will stop and go back to the surface. Slabs were placed on the ground to avoid getting bogged down in a kind of rust mud, brackish, indescribable thing…”
What’s That Smell?
The place was so epic, that he didn’t want to stop, but the heat and a terrible smell were starting to become overwhelming. The odor from some nasty lava-looking gross stuff on the ground made our feel like he was risking his health. He described it as, “I feel like I’m suffering a nasal washing with alcohol.” It was the smell of metal and the taste was getting in his mouth…
One Brave Soul
Yet it was one final sign that made Manit007 turn back around. “Danger of Death: High Voltage,” the sign read… And that was it. “OK I’M OUT OF HERE,” our brave adventurer wrote alongside his final photo before making his way back up to high ground — and safety. Risking his health and putting his life on the line as he wandered down into the great unknown was one thing, but he was not messing around with high voltage. Maybe he had some sense after all? He never did find out what he explored that day. It was an incredibly hazardous and extremely eerie environment, that’s for sure. And one thing is certain: This French man is just about the only person out there who would go down there alone!
