School should be a place where parents feel safe to send their children. It should be a place where the children are focused on their education, making friends, and preparing for the real world.
Two parents of a high school boy from Michigan soon found out that high school for their son was anything but what they had hoped…
Allyson Moran was hired as a substitute teacher during the 2016-2017 academic year. She was a married, 26-year-old women looking to start her teaching career. In addition to teaching, she also took on a role as the school’s soccer coach for girls.
Moran took particular interest in one of her male students. He was a 17-year-old boy, who has not been named, to protect his privacy. The two would spend a good deal of time together during the school year.
Moran and the boy often had lunch together at school. They also spent time together after school. Sometimes it would be just the two of them, while other times other students joined them.
In March 2017, Moran and the boy began connecting on social media. Snapchat was one of the outlets they used to speak. The boy said that at first, the contact was innocent. Allyson would ask how he was doing, and other appropriate conversation.
The conversation topics quickly shifted between Allyson and the boy. What at first seemed innocent, now turned into inappropriate conversation. Allyson turned the conversations sexual.
On numerous occasions, Allyson would send Snapchat photos to the boy. These photos contained nude images of herself. The boy partook in the same behavior and sent nude photographs of himself back to her.
When the school was on spring break, in April, Allyson invited the teen over to her house. This was a month after the social media contact began. When she greeted him, she was standing at the door in a robe.
Allyson had instructed the boy to park his car far away from her house. She told him she did not want the neighbors to see the boy’s car in her driveway. He obliged and parked his car down the road.
When inside, Allyson lead the boy to a man cave in the basement. Here, she took off her robe and kissed the boy. Later, she brought him upstairs to her bedroom where she sexually assaulted him.
This was not the only time the sexual encounters occurred. That same week, Allyson invited the boy back over to her house. He agreed and the two partook in sexual activities again. After this, no other physical contact occurred between the boy and his teacher. However, they did continue speaking on social media.
In June 2013, Allyson married Ryan Moran, according to court documents. Public records indicate that at the time of her affair with the 17-year-old boy, Allyson and her husband were still living together. It is unclear where her husband was at the time of the affair, or if he knew something was going on.
During the time of the relationship the boy had with his teacher, he had a girlfriend. The behavior he was involved in with his teacher did not seem right, and he needed to tell someone. He decided to tell his girlfriend.
In July, when the boy told his girlfriend, she decided to tell his family members. This was not something that should be kept a secret, she felt, and the boy needed help to escape the situation. His parents soon phoned authorities and decided to press charges against Allyson.
The family provided police with evidence showing the interaction between their son and the teacher. The boy also went to the police with his family and detailed the affair to make sure they had enough evidence to arrest her. The judge decided there was plenty of information there to make a case and decided to move forward with charges.
In September of 2017, Allyson was arrested for her behavior. She was charged with three felony counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct involving a student. Additionally, she was charged with one fourth degree criminal sexual conduct charge with a student at the school, which is a misdemeanor.
In court, at the preliminary hearing, the boy testified in court with Allyson present. His parents knew how difficult this would be for him, but he knew what had to be done to put this predator in prison. He detailed the events to the court room, shocking those who listened.
If convicted of the charges brought forward by the court, Allyson could go to prison for up to 15 years. The trial is still ongoing, and it could take years for the courts to decide her fate. In the meantime, Allyson has lost her job at the school.
After the incident, Moran’s husband moved to South Dakota. Allyson moved to Illinois. It is unclear if the two are still married, however, we can assume that a situation like this puts a great deal of stress on a marriage.
Social media is a dangerous outlet for predators to reach their prey. It is extremely important for parents to be involved in their children’s school life, as well as their extra-curricular activities. Social media is an uncontrolled world where children are given access to things they might never have been exposed to at such a young age otherwise.
It is important to inform our children of the signs of sexual assault. This behavior is becoming all too prevalent in our everyday lives. It is up to us to protect our children and make sure they are comfortable enough to talk to us when something does not feel right.
