One of every parent’s worst fears is that they won’t always be there to protect their child from harm. Yet parents hope that when they send their kids to school, the teachers and staff will look after the students as if they were their own children.
The parents from one Texas middle school expected that the faculty and staff provided a safe and secure learning environment for their children. But they had chills when they discovered what one of the teachers had done to a student…
Ever since Alexandria Vera was just 14 years old, she’s been working to support herself and her family. And when she got pregnant when she was 18, Alexandria was even more motivated to keep working so she could give her daughter things she never had as a child.
The English Teacher
By the time Alexandra was 21, she had already bought her first home and put herself through college so she could be a teacher. After graduating, she got a job working as an English teacher at Stovall Middle School in Texas…
The New Teacher
Alexandria was still so young but the school was impressed by how responsible she seemed and how much she had accomplished on her own. At first, Alexandria got along great with her students, but when parents found out what she was doing outside of class, they demanded the school fire her.
The trouble all began for Alexandria when she was teaching an English class during summer school in 2015. When an eighth-grader missed class one day, she sent him a message on Instagram to check up on him. Later, Vera went over to the student’s home to pick him up and they shared their first kiss…
The eighth grader told Vera that his parents were out of town, so the next day she drove over to his house again, they had sex for the first time. From then on, Vera continued to meet the 13-year-old in secret and the relationship continued to get more serious.
By the time the school year started the following September, the relationship between Vera and the 13-year-old was still going strong and other students started noticing their inappropriate behavior. “He like grabbed her butt, and everybody saw it,” one student said. “And then they were talking about it…”
Soon after that, the relationship was getting so serious that the couple told the 13-year-old’s parents about what had been going on. Not only were they not mad about what was going on, but they even allowed their son to sleep at Vera’s house some nights.
Outside of school, the 13-year-old started referring to Vera as his girlfriend, and Vera’s 6-year-old daughter occasionally called the teenager ‘dad’. When Vera found out she was pregnant with the teen’s child, they were both thrilled by the news…
Child Protective Services
Even though the boy was only 13 years old himself, Vera explained that his parents were “very supportive and excited”. However, when Child Protective Services made an unexpected visit to the school in February to question Vera about the relationship, she got nervous and had an abortion.
The School Reacts
Soon after that, however, the school had already been notified about the inappropriate and illegal relationship between Vera and one of their young students. By April, the Texas school fired Vera and issued a statement on the matter…
“Aldine ISD has been made aware that charges have been filed against a former Stovall Middle School teacher involved in inappropriate behavior with a male student,” the school district said. “When the allegation was made in April, the teacher was immediately removed from the school and placed on administrative leave.”
The Investigation Begins
According to the school, the Aldine ISD Police began investigating the incident immediately. “The safety and security of Aldine ISD’s students and staff remains a priority of the school district,” the school said in a statement…
The Aldine ISD Police turned all their findings from the preliminary investigation over to the Montgomery County Police, who put a warrant out for Vera’s arrest. Meanwhile, the 24-year-old had run away when she heard she was being investigated.
By the end of the summer, Vera turned herself in to the Montgomery County Police and was charged with continuous sexual abuse of a child. Vera managed to post a $100,000 bond, so police released her from jail until her day in court…
Tracking Her Every Move
While out on bail, Vera was ordered not to contact her 13-year-old victim, not to go online, not to go near any school, and couldn’t be out of the house from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Police also forced Vera to wear a GPS tracker to make sure she followed those rules.
At the start of 2017, Vera’s trial finally began. Because of the charge against her, she was facing a 30-year maximum prison sentence. The prosecution argued that Vera acted deceptively and pretended to date the boy’s father to explain why the 13-year-old was sleeping at her home…
The prosecution also pointed out that Vera was in possession of pornographic photos of the boy and that she let other students have sex at her house. Vera’s defense, on the other hand, argued Vera grew up witnessing domestic violence in her home and just wanted to be loved. “I think she was driven by being in love with him,” a therapist, Karen Lawson, testified.
Sending A Message
After listening to both arguments, the judge agreed that Vera wasn’t a threat to other children, but still needed to be punished for what she had done. “We want out educators to teach our students,” the judge said. “We want them to keep their hands off the students…”
The former teacher was offered a plea deal and plead guilty to a lesser charge, which meant she was only sentenced to 10 years in prison with the chance for parole after 5 years. The boy was also sent to foster care because his parents did nothing when they found out about the relationship.
Parents from the school, however, are still shocked that something like this could have happened to their child. “I have chills just because of this — just think that the teacher would even do something like this,” parent Mary Claycomb said.
