As most folks, their life follows a pretty standard plan. They’ll make their way through school and, if they’ve got the smarts and the finances, they’ll go to college, land themselves a job that pays well enough, then settle down and start a family.
Of course, with most plans, things don’t always go exactly as expected. It’s almost a guarantee that there will be detours along the way toward that “happily ever after.” But for one woman, a detour along her path would turn out to be a dead end….
According to Plan
If you’ll excuse the pun, Alaina’s life seemed to be coming together in a “textbook” fashion. At 23 years old, she had landed herself a job as an algebra teacher at Plano Senior High School in Plano, Texas, just a short time after she’d graduated from college.
Coming Up Roses
It wasn’t just professionally where things were looking good for Alaina. She had recently gotten engaged to her boyfriend and as the school year approached, it seemed as if she had a great life laid out ahead of her…
Work Is Good
When she started at the high school, things went well enough. She received the support she needed from her coworkers and her students liked her well enough. On paper, she should have been happy with her life.
But deep down, Alaina felt like something was missing. Despite how ideal her life seemed, she felt as if she was living the life she was supposed to, not the life that she wanted to. She was unsatisfied with the course her life was taking but didn’t have a good idea of what to do about it….
Then, just a couple of weeks after the school year began, Alaina found herself in a strange situation. She was grading the tests she’d collected from her students earlier in the day when she noticed that one of her students had written an extra little message on his test.
The student, a 16-year-old named John, had written down his Snapchat username on his exam. The clear invitation to privately contact a student on the person-to-person multimedia sharing app is something just about every teacher would ignore, if not reprimand the student for…
But for whatever reason, Alaina didn’t do either of those things. Of all the things she could have done, Alaina Ferguson decided to reach out to John on Snapchat. When the 2 began to chat with each other, John would find out that his Snapchat gambit had worked out even better than he could have expected.
In their conversation, things quickly escalated from friendly chatting to something much more inappropriate. In short order, Alaina and John were discussing risqué topics, which quickly transformed into the 2 taking nude selfies of themselves and sending them back and forth…
Crossing The Line
Then Alaina crossed an unforgivable line when she arranged to meet John at her fiancé’s apartment while he was out of town. Once there, she and John consummated their forbidden relationship.
Again and Again
In the following weeks, The teacher would meet with the boy in that apartment again and again, each time engaging in intercourse. At times, Alaina would also give John alcohol, with the 2 sometimes playing beer pong together. They even had intercourse in a public park on one occasion…
Alaina had decided she was going completely off of the prescribed path in life. After just 2 short months, she quit her job at the high school. She also told John that she intended to break things off with her fiancé because she had no feelings for the man.
Throw It All Away
The only constant Alaina wanted to keep in her life, apparently, was her relationship with John. On at least one occasion after she’d quit, the now former teacher had sex with the minor in his pickup truck after a football game…
For his part, John was apparently quite happy with the situation, so much so that he was bragging to his friends about it. He “was just talking about it to his friends and I guess a teacher or a student overheard it,” said Andy Flores, a senior student at Plano Senior High.
Word Gets Around
Once the word was out, the police began to investigate Alaina’s behavior. Between the Snapchat exchanges, phone records and corroborating testimony, it wasn’t difficult to gather enough evidence to arrest the libidinous former teacher…
I Don’t Want To Be Right
According to the arrest affidavit, Alaina Ferguson “knew it was not the right thing to do, but it felt right at the time.” For her repeated poor judgment and predatory behavior, the former teacher was charged with several counts of sexual assault.
Alaina’s arrest quickly became the juiciest gossip at Plano Senior High. “A friend of mine told me, and he heard from his friend. And his friend knew the guy who had relations with this teacher,” said one student. “It’s kind of crazy,” said another student. “It’s scary that this could happen between a teacher and a child.”…
Not Like That
James Bishop, the parent of another student, had similar sentiments. “That’s very concerning to hear you’re sending your child somewhere you think is safe,” he said. “You want them to learn and get a good education but not that kind.”
Alaina’s undoing was complete. She was without a job and her engagement, naturally, had ended as soon as her fiancé found out what she had done. If she was convicted, she would be a registered sex offender, meaning she would never work as a teacher ever again…
At the time of this writing, Alaina Ferguson is still awaiting trial and must wear an electronic monitoring device, deactivate all of her social media sites and is prohibited from using the internet.
