Every now and then we come across an urban legend where folks receive wild bursts of strength from an adrenaline rush that turns them into a superhero for just a minute.
But it’s not the words of fiction that tell these stories. When it’s the headline of a newspaper, it’s the facts that most often make us do a double take.
Take the story of Charlotte Heffelmire, the 19-year-old girl, whose insane strength and quick-thinking saved her father’s life.
A few days after Thanksgiving, the teen was hanging out with her father who was working on his GMC truck. In a flash too fast for recognition of the facts, the truck fell, spilled gasoline everywhere, and lit the workspace on fire.
“I was on my back, face up, and I was trying to get some corroded brakes lines when apparently the jack slipped and fell down on me.” Eric Heffelmire said. “Pinned me across right here on my shoulder,” he said.
That’s when Charlotte sprung into high gear and lifted the truck off her father. She gripped it with all her force and hoisted it off him. Then she closed the garage doors to contain the fire, calmly walked into the house, and got everybody out and to safety.
She even burned her feet in the process, an injury she had no recollection receiving because of the rush of adrenaline.
Firefighters and police honored her bravery and strength in a recent ceremony, but we’re still too busy marveling at how she accomplished such a feat (and with bare feet, no less).
