Anybody who has ever been to the circus knows the delight that comes with the amazing animal acts.
Whether it’s the finesse of aerial artists, the courage of trapeze performers, or the humor of clowns, the acts of the circus never fail to leave viewers enamored. However, there is a dark side to the show that many of us would rather not think about.
We know that while watching a lion balance on a rubber ball or a bear walk upright on its hind legs is pretty incredible, these animals were not designed to behave in a way that so strongly counters their physical composure. In fact, the only way to encourage an animal so abnormally is with brutal practices that make us balk.
In 2015, an eyewitness uncovered just how extensive these practices were. The observer visited Suzhou, China, a city in West Shanghai that encompasses more than 300 circuses and went inside 10 different animal training facilities. The conditions uncovered were atrocious. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) released the footage in a horrifying video.
It’s easy to sit on the opposite side of the world and condemn others for this cruel and unusual treatment of animals, but the truth is that many circuses in the Western World practice the same training techniques. If you’ve ever been to a circus and seen an animal perform an elaborate trick, that animal was likely coaxed and beaten in highly unethical circumstances.
Take a look at the video below and think about what these means for those who support animal acts:
