Like all the other concertgoers who attended a recent Las Vegas music festival, one U.S. Marine Corps hoping to have a fun night out with a loved one.
However, when Taylor Winston heard gunshots during the concert, his first instinct was not to flee the area and save himself but to help rescue the injured and get them to safety. “It was a mini war zone,” the 29-year-old Iraq War veteran said. “But we couldn’t fight back.”
Winston and his girlfriend, Jenn Lewis, started looking around the venue for a way to transport victims. “I saw a field with a bunch of white trucks,” Winston said. “I tested my luck to see if any of them had keys in it, first one we tried opening had keys sitting right there. I started looking for people to take to the hospital. There was just too many and it was overwhelming how much blood was everywhere.”
Winston and Lewis packed the truck with as many people as possible and headed straight to the hospital. “Once we dropped them off, we were like well, let’s go back for round two and go get some more,” Winston said. “I transported probably 20 to 30 people injured to the hospital.”
