This loving family from Virginia decided they wanted to surprise their Dad with the gift of a lifetime.
But to do that, they knew they had to track down a forgotten family secret, 21 years in the making. With a little creativity, and a whole lot of dedication, this family was able to do the unthinkable. Moreover, what they found was a surprise their Dad will truly never forget…
Stephanie Hamren, who lives in Troutville, Virginia, would do anything for her loving father. Her friends and family know her as a real family girl who appreciates all that her parents have sacrificed for her.
Stephanie’s dad means the world to her, and she would do anything possible to put a smile on his.
Stephanie told her father she had a surprise for him, but he had no idea what. However, when he finally laid his eyes on what he hadn’t seen in 21 years, he understood why she and her mother had been so secretive.
Stephanie recalls her dad speaking fondly about a car with a very long history. But she knew she had to dig deeper to find out why this car meant so much to him.
A Passion Project
She learned that, when her dad was just 16, he restored a stunning Ford Sedan that had rolled off the production line back in 1936. It was a real beauty, and it wasn’t hard to see why he fell in love with it.
Showing off His Prized Possession
At the time, Hamren’s dad took his beloved car up and down the United States. Everyone he encountered seemed to appreciate the beautiful automobile, and he even won many car shows with the Sedan.
“My dad talked about this car for as long as I can remember,” wrote Hamren later on Facebook. “[He was] always saying he would buy it back if he could find it.”
A Member of the Family
After Stephanie’s father started a family, he decided to sell the Sedan in 1993 to raise money to pay for his daughter’s seminary. He knew it was a difficult decision, but it was one he was willing to make for Stephanie.
Searching for the Car
In 2013, Hamren and her mom set out to put this dream into motion, and the search for the old Sedan began. But, they knew it wasn’t going to be easy.
Stephanie and her mom spent months looking for the vintage vehicle, and finally they managed to track it down in Ringgold, Louisiana, where it had been sitting for 15 years.
Purchasing the Car
They knew they had to bring the car home with them, so “After a few months of finding it and arranging the purchase, we scrambled the money together and brought it home on our secret trip to ‘New Orleans,’” Hamren wrote on Facebook.
Keeping a Secret
While it may have been Hamren’s idea, she relied on her mom’s support the whole time. Her mom pulled through and managed to keep it a secret the entire time.
Bringing Her Home
Hamren and her mom got the car back to Virginia with relative ease. “Finding the car, getting the money, and getting it halfway across the United States with no problems is truly a blessing from God!” said Hamren.
The Big Reveal
All of their hard work was all worth it when Hamren revealed the car to her dad. He could not believe that he was being handed the keys to his beloved car that he hadn’t laid eyes on since 1993.
On the car’s key chain is an etching referencing a psalm, Matthew 19:29, in which Jesus extols the virtues of sacrificing possessions for his sake. It was especially fitting, as this is pretty much what Hamren’s dad did for his family.
Fixing the Vehicle
This wasn’t the final stop of the Hamrens’ journey with the old Sedan. There was still a lot of work to be done to the car, and fixing a vehicle as old as this takes a lot of cash.
More importantly, much of the Hamrens’ time and money had recently been spent on helping Hamren’s mom fight an illness. So in March 2016, Hamren set up a GoFundMe account to help pay for the repairs to the car.
Hoping Others Will Help
“All extra money has been spent on my mom’s hospitalization this past year,” wrote Hamren on GoFundMe. She added, “It’s my dream to get this car back on the road for my dad.”
“Many have asked if I had a GoFundMe account because they would like to donate,” Stephanie wrote. “So I figured I would make one. We will see how God uses it.”
