Talk about being in the wrong place at the wrong time…
When it comes to rescuing animals in distress, the AAU or Animal Aid Unlimited, are the people for the job. These brave and caring folks have rescued literally hundreds of creatures in a quandary, but the last thing they expected to find in this septic tank was this…
What IS That?
When the brave AAU crew opened the septic tank, having received reports of strange noises, they were more than a little bit shocked.
Not Unusual, But…
Strange things happen in India, especially when it comes to animals roaming freely. But this one was a shocker even for seasoned experts.
A Sticky Situation
So with all the years of experience under the AAU’s belt, they had never seen this before…and it was quite of shock for them, as well as the homeowners.
The hole leading into the septic tank at the property was so small that no one could have imagined a creature of this size fitting into it.
Amazingly the access point was no larger than a computer screen, as the AAU explained in a statement, “We got a call that a donkey was trapped in a septic tank under a house. We have no idea how a donkey could have gotten in this tiny hole.”
The donkey was discover, but the AAU team had no idea how to free it from its captivity, via a hole so small. They tried a pickaxe, but it was too slow, and time was running out.
The rescue team had to do a lot of guesswork in trying to establish what happened with the donkey. They assumed it had been trapped for around 24 hours, and that it’s life was definitely now in danger.
The team had no choice but to bring in the big guns, namely a huge jackhammer. “We cannot fathom the fear and despair he must have felt being unable to cry for help and thinking that he was never going to get out,” AAU said.
It took a while, and time was running out fast. However the brave team managed to make some good headway in opening up access for the donkey’s escape.
As is usually the case, nothing is straightforward. As an AAU rescue worker explained, “An actual jackhammer operator was not available on short notice, our rescue team had to operate the hammer ourselves despite never having used the machine before. It was difficult to operate, but knowing who was patiently waiting underneath made the work seem easy.”
After many long hours of dust, drilling, sweat and even a little blood, the team finally made the breakthrough, penetrating the solid concrete floor.
The poor donkey was freezing and wet, but thanks to the true heroes of AAU, it was saved. “Once the hole was widened, our rescuers Deendayal and Ganpat descended into the sewage and wrapped blankets around the donkey,” AAU’s website reported.
Now all that remained was to attach the hoist securely and lift the donkey to safety and freedom.
The donkey was exhausted from its ordeal, but with the help of the rescue, enjoyed a happy ending, being taken to safety with smiling faces.
The AAU team loaded the donkey onto an a special ambulance, carting it off to the hospital for some rehab and treatment.
Distressed and Terrified
The AAU explained the situation, “We found [the] terrified donkey inside the tank standing chest-deep in filthy, cold sewage water. We can only guess that he may have been fighting with another donkey and in the commotion slipped and fell in the hole.”
The AAU was set up in 2002, and is run out of Udaipur in India. The organisation’s brave and diligent workers rescue and treat a variety of injured creatures. The AAU website describes it as “a life-changing place for both people and animals.”
The AAU’s official mission statement is very telling of the kind of valuable work they do – “Our mission is to rescue and treat the unowned street animals of Udaipur who have become ill or injured, and through their rescue inspire a community to protect and defend the lives of all animals.”
The poor donkey made an amazing recovery at the sanctuary, aka the donkey hospital. One AAU rep said, “He was so happy to be free! He rolled, ate, ran, played and enjoyed cuddles with his rescuers.”
The dramatic donkey rescue has gone viral, and been viewed and shared by thousands of people, all praising the brave AAU team for their efforts.
