Diabetes is currently one of the most commonly-held diseases in all of human history. According to the CDC, more than 30 million individuals – roughly 9.4 percent of the American population – currently live with the disease. It’s debilitating, disheartening, and potentially deadly if not taken care of. Even worse, 7.2 million Americans don’t even realize they have it.
If you’re experiencing one or more of the following symptoms, you may want to visit with your doctor, before it’s too late. Treatment options exist which can help patients lower their risk just by following some simple steps. Although a number of lifestyle changes may lie ahead, understanding the symptoms of diabetes will ensure that you find the correct treatment.
22. Increased Thirst
If for some reason you’re thirsty it may be an early sign of the disease. Be cautious if you find yourself constantly drinking water yet never satisfied.
21. Increased Hunger
Same goes for hunger. Many who experience early signs of diabetes can’t seem to conquer the craving. Eating excessively is a subtle indication of diabetes.
20. Dry Mouth
Akin to an unquenchable thirst, the lack of hydration may reach all the way to your mouth, resulting in dry mouth. When water isn’t working, again, it may be another sign.
19. Frequent Urination
On the opposite end of the spectrum is frequent urination. You can’t stop running to the bathroom for relief. Your body is trying to tell you something.
18. Urinary Infections
Unexplained urinary infections may not seem like they’re associated with diabetes but the can be. Similar infections can indicate the disease, which we’ll cover later.
17. Unexplained Weight Loss
Losing extra pounds without dieting or exercising? You may welcome the weight loss but you should also be wary. The decrease in waistline size can mean diabetes is around the corner.
Feeling tired randomly throughout the day can also be a sign that you may dismiss you something else. It’s easy to blame lack of sleep or stress for your exhaustion, but it may be something more serious.
15. Feeling Weak
Accompanying the above is a general feeling of weakness. When this comes unexplained it is especially indicative of diabetes. If you otherwise wouldn’t feel weak, look for other symptoms as well.
14. Blurred Vision
Many signs and symptoms of diabetes on this list can be attributed to something else to the uninitiated. Blurred vision falls into that category. Do not dismiss this symptom as simple tiredness.
Pain in the head is another subtle symptom many miss or dismiss completely. Don’t jump to the conclusion of diabetes just because your head hurts, but if there are accompanying symptoms you may want to consult a doctor.
12. Itchy Skin
Itchy skin can indicate many things. But if you just got out of the shower or otherwise have no reason to itch at your skin, it may be something more than a simple itch.
11. Infection Between Fingers
This is the second in a list of infections that may indicate diabetes. If you notice something going on between your fingers it’s time to see the doctor.
10. Infection Under Breasts
Another type of infection indicating diabetes can be located under the breasts. This is mostly something women should be wary of, but larger men can also see similar symptoms.
9. Infection In Or Around Sex Organs
Both men and women are susceptible to infection of the genitals if they are experiencing the early signs of diabetes. These infections are never to be ignored and can mean any number of things, including diabetes.
8. Numbness In Legs
An odd numbness in the legs is a scary thing and for good reason. We’ve covered stories where such an occurrence is life-threatening. But it’s also a sign of diabetes, not as immediate a problem but a serious issue nonetheless.
7. Pain In Legs
Unlike the above, pain in the legs instead of numbness is completely the opposite but no less dangerous. Be especially wary of this if you weight train regularly, as such exercise may lead you to dismiss the symptom.
This is yet another symptom that can be attributed to any number of things. Look for other signs or symptoms before stressing too much about this.
Just like the above, there are myriad causes of this. If you find yourself in the bathroom to vomit think about what caused the reaction. If you can’t pinpoint it, it may indicate diabetes.
4. Unusual Breathing
It’s highly unusual to be out of breath while sitting on your couch reading a book. Similarly if you find yourself completely out of breath after ascending a staircase you should think about seeing a doctor.
3. Sweet Smelling Breath
This is a unique-to-diabetes symptom you should not ignore. Inexplicably sweet smelling breath is a very clear indication that you may have diabetes.
2. Slow Healing Wounds
Diabetes has to do with issues regarding the blood, so slow-healing wounds are an obvious symptom your blood is experiencing something strange. If your scratches and cuts are taking forever to heal or not healing at all, you may be diabetic.
1. Dark Skin Patches
Dark skin patches are also a malfunction of the blood. You may not notice these at first but when you do it is very serious and a vast to the doctor is in order.
