When these grandkids found a safe inside their grandparents’ home, they were amazed to see what was inside…
For those that have lost loved ones, you will know what a daunting experience it is sorting out their home. Opening cupboards and searching through garages can lead to many emotions, not to mention memories. This is what happened to this Wisconsin family, but their outcome was somewhat shocking. Their little treasure hunt ended in something far more than they ever could have imagined…
Sadly, as some people know, sorting through a deceased relative’s belongings is never easy, it’s overwhelming and often done with a heavy heart. But for one particular American family the chore turned into something of a treasure hunt when they found a safe hidden away for generations. And what they discovered inside it totally surprised them.
Looking back, their father remembers the safe arriving many years previously. With time, he’d forgotten about it. His memories of it had faded and would perhaps have vanished completely if the safe hadn’t been uncovered.
The kids jokingly would call their grandparents’ property “the compound,” and it’s easy to see why. They lived on a vast 45-acre plot by a river in Wisconsin. The elderly couple had owned not just their home there, but also barns, sheds and garages too. A perfect place for hiding secrets…
One of the treasures uncovered by reddit writer vsky, in his grandmother’s home was this picture of his grandfather as a young soldier. The words “just taking it easy” were written on the back. It soon became one of the families favorite photographs, too. But unbeknownst to them, there were plenty more material treasures hiding on his grandparents’ property.
Away from the rest of the buildings, at the very edge of the compound, there was a final garage almost begging to be explored. So, accompanied by his father and little brother, vsky carefully ventured inside to take a look.
A Dull Knock
At first look, the garage was nothing special, so the trio got to work sweeping and generally cleaning up. But then vsky’s brother accidentally knocked his broom against the wall, it didn’t take an expert to realize that the dull knock the broom made indicated that this was a false wall. And something lay behind it…
Whoever had built the wall had seemingly meant for it to stay a secret. Although it was made of a thin plywood rather than brick, it had been painted and made to look like the rest of the interior of the garage. The guys were close to uncovering what seemed to have been one of the grandparents’ most closely guarded secrets. But what lay behind there?
Together, the three of them managed to remove the fake wall to reveal a blue safe, and it was huge. They estimated the weight of the fixture to be as much as about 2,000 pounds. It was something perhaps more likely to be found in a high security bank than a barn. Trying to rack his memory, vsky’s father later remembered as a kid it being delivered by tow truck. As he posted, “It makes sense… you aren’t moving this bad boy with anything less than a tow truck.”
The sense of excitement was tempered, by the realization that nobody actually knew the combination for the safe. The only people who presumably would know it were both dead. However, the guys weren’t ready to give up so fast.
Covering Their Tracks
They scoured the garage, looking high and low for any slight clue that might help them guess the secret combination. Unsurprisingly, the grandparents hadn’t been so careless to leave the answer written on a piece of paper next to the safe. But then, all of a sudden, a breakthrough came…
Sure enough, almost like something out of the Da Vinci Code, the old couple had left an exciting trail of clues in the shape of numbers written on rafters in each of the eight garages dotted around the compound. Once all eight had been collected, it was just a case of trial and error. Finally, the guys hit the jackpot, and the huge safe door opened.
The gun was the first thing to catch the trio’s eyes. And it was not just any old gun. It was a .30-30 Winchester, an iconic firearm first produced by the very famous American company back in 1895. Just the firearm alone could be worth a pretty penny. But this was just the beginning
Counting The Loot
The family estimated that there were about 1,000 coins in the collection, most of which were silver dollars and half-dollars. Some of them dated back from the 1880s and 1890s, and while some looked old and worn, others appeared as shiny as on the day they were minted.
One coin however stood out from the rest: an 1892 Morgan Silver Dollar. Highly prized by top collectors, some variations of the coin have been known to fetch over $150,000 at auction. It therefore seemed that the family might have a real treasure trove on their hands. But, though obviously excited, they kept their heads clear and turned to the internet for some advice
Determining The Value
The consensus was clear: they should definitely not attempt to clean the coins since this could damage them. Nor were they to sell the collection in bulk without first cataloguing each coin to determine their value. Understandably, the family didn’t want to miss out on a small fortune, so they took all the advice on board. Yet there was still more here besides.
Wad Of Papaers
Comparing to the piles of silver coins and an antique rifle, the wad of papers which were nestled in the hulking safe must have seemed fairly underwhelming. But these, too, merited further inspection. They were found to include “Treasury Notes” printed before Prohibition had swept the United States.
The pile of papers contained title deeds to a piece of property. The family had all of a sudden become landowners . After a little more digging it was revealed that the area in question boasts little more than birch trees and an old shack.
Sharing his story with the world, vsky revealed that, while the valuable antiques was an unexpected windfall, equally as valuable to the family, were smaller items whose value is largely sentimental. No price can be put on the old picture of his grandfather as a soldier. It is now very much treasured by vsky.
Holding On To Memories
Meanwhile, self-declared “history nut,” vsky wrote that he was resolved to hold onto his treasures, especially the old rifle and the coins. Dealers may see them as valuable investments, but for him they will always simply be a link to his own past and a fascinating insight into the lives of his grandparents.
So next time you find an old safe in your grandparents home and don’t know the combination code, think like a detective and don’t give up! Who knows what you might uncover!
